COOLING TOWERS PARK
  • COOLING TOWERS URBAN PARK
    Sheffield [UK]

  • The cooling towers site design competition offers an opportunity to apply an innovative urban planning approach towards the redevelopment of industrial wasteland

The gateway location of the site with its surrounding input on multiple levels ask for 'maximum intervention'.
The site with its existing different systems and the surrounding urban and landscape structure are stitched together. They generate a deformed grid which becomes the underlay for further development. Cross views, interior transparency...

One cooling tower stays empty, very much like the Gasometer in Oberhausen Germany

To strengthen the landmark function the facades of the 2 towers will be upgraded with a new cladding and a dynamic colour system - skin pointillism. Cylindrical elements on the facade change colour in time. At night, the towers are percieved from the M1 as light beacons.
